The life-span of microenterprises in context of developing countries is curtailed by a myriad of challenges, such as limited resources, capacity, support and many others. ICTs are a potential antidote to the problems. However, there are challenges in using ICTs to sort out the challenges. The problems for microenterprises go beyond access to ICT and include social, political and economic factors such as lack of access to credit to start-up, lack of recognition within communities and the impact of HIV/AIDS. The research focused on the case of South Africa and was conducted on an intervention for supporting Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises. In this Master’s Thesis Project, two Code Smells, four Anti-Patterns and four types of Design Principle violations have been examined. We developed a detection program called the Anti-Pattern Scanner. This scanner has been used in an empirical evaluation where five open-source Java projects have been examined and scanned for these ‘pattern’ problems. The results are that the examined problems generally do occur in software systems. The problems are estimated to be inconvenient to software development, depending on the strength of their presence. Compression of digital images has been a topic of research for many years and a number of image compression standards have been created for different applications. This thesis focuses on some key technologies for image compression, namely wavelet-based image coders that combines transform coding with sub-band coders and carried out a comparative study of wavelet-based coding for still images using second generation wavelets via lifting scheme. Wavelet coders apart from offering superior compression ratios have also very useful features such as resolution scalability. There has been recent interest in building reversible integer transforms using lifting scheme for image compression. A dynamic program slice is that part of a program that affects the computation of a variable of interest during program execution on a specific program input. Dynamic program slicing was originally proposed only for program debugging. It is usually accepted that understanding and debugging of multithreaded and distributed programs are much harder compared to those of sequential programs. Different types of dynamic program slices, together with algorithms to compute them have been proposed in the literature. Most of the existing algorithms for finding slices of distributed programs use trace files and are not efficient in terms of time and space complexity. Some existing algorithms also use a complex intermediate representation graph by adding a no of different types of dependency edges and by traversing the dependency graph. This work is about Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks (WSANs) consist of a large number of heterogeneous nodes known as sensors and actors. Sensor nodes have lower cost, lower power, multifunctional devices that can communicate untethered in limited distances, while actor nodes are resource rich, having higher processing and transmission capabilities, equipped with additional devices and longer battery life, they collect and process sensed data and perform the appropriate actions on the environment. In WSANs, the distributed sensing of a physical phenomenon is possible with the collaborative operation of the sensor nodes. Whenever a sensor node detects an event in the deployment region like fire, earth quake, etc the event information is transmitted to the actor nodes.
